May Day by Leonard M HawkesDescending from
Clumped and grassy
Masses of hills,
Black willows greet
New-budded in
Gold and green.
The valley too,
Lately verdant,
Promises moderation.
But the marshes,
Reflecting snowbound
Wintery peaks,
Remain brown:
Spring's vigor
Still veiled--
Patient--perhaps
A prudent integrity
Of an earlier age. 05/05/2003 Author's Note: Cache Valley from Petersboro
