Humans

by Trisha De Gracia

There's people about.
such fascinating subjects
and I find
that being one of them
can be like going
under cover
finding the scoop
on these odd living things
This quick blink
of evolutionary
fluke
that's keeping us here
for now.
We've been around
for a taste of a while
and we still think
in terms of life and death
black and white
with no middle groud
we're so silly
we think our thoughts fit in
as soon as numbers validate
what you already believe in your heart.
We count constantly
as a way of control
1, 2, 3 keeps us breathing
because the the numbers never change
no matter how the world seems to.
Change
ha! We're scared of that too
and naive
to believe
that we invent it
ourselves
some brilliant spark
from a grunting mammal
in a buisness suit
rubbing sticks together.
We set up rules
unspoken, of course
and abide by them
like railings
fences
and walls.
When one breaks the mold
the world within earshot
runs blind
and insulted
and vicious and angry
trying hard to destroy
the bird that
needed
to stretch it's wings
and try to fly.
Hat's off to our brilliant technology!
One shot
plucks the bird from the air
and gives us our Saturday's dinner.
We're funny to watch
when you think of our lives
like an ongoing mockumentary
Discovery's parody.
We're territorial
sexual
instinctive attempts
by nature
to see
if the thinking human
will outlast
the fly.
