The Deserter

by Jane E Pearce

How rude
to never
say goodbye;
no packed suitcases,
holding of mail,
or cancelled papers,
no tickets
to far off places;
left behind-
your absence
that lays
in puddles, while
last night
in the shadows,
I'm sure
I saw you smile.

One for the imagination! The title suggests that there is someone who has left "his/her duty". And is happy about the concern left behind ("In the shadow I am sure I saw you smile")
