My First Black Eyes

by Madeline Pestolesi

"Whoa, who punched you in the nose?"
It may seem odd,
But I'm glad someone finally had the guts to come out and ask
Instead of giving me funny looks
And making quiet comments to their friends
That I am probably a victim of domestic violence.
It's better when strangers just point out
That my eyes are freakishly purple
And banana yellow.
My thick-framed glasses hide them pretty well
But observant people still see them.
Lucky for me
Most the people I meet are not that observant.
