The Comfort of My Shadows

by Jennifer L Banks

Difficult to hold onto,
impossible to catch
I wander towards the light
wanting you,
but dance away
Into the shadows of the night,
before my heart is exposed.

It’s hard to get close to me,
The light burns my skin,
I’m comfortable in the shadows
Dance away,I tell myself....
Spin....
into these shadows
get out of the light,
before someone sees you
my shadows are my comfort,
be thy delight.

I remember the pain of a broken heart
I remember it too well.
The light is too bright where you stand,
My memories,hauntingly real.
I always think I can go forward
And gaze into your eyes,
but the memories,
damn memories......
I ever so despise.

If you dare come into the shadows,
offer your hand to me
I would think for once
that maybe, just maybe,
we’d conquer my urge to flee.
