lucifer at the piano

by Emily G Myers

it's a smoke-filled room
can't see past the steps you take
but I can see you
and Lucifer's playing piano in the bar
he locked up hell for a while
to play piano a bit and visit the beach
and I just so naturally walk towards you
with tiny piano sounds in the background
I left my smile on the shelf
but my heart won't stay there with it
I hold my hand out to you
and the music swells
I think Lucifer did that on purpose
only to make me believe you might take my hand
but you don't
and you smile as the piano becomes light again
as if nothing ever happened
as if my hand had never left my side
you know better
and sing gently along
making me regret all the things I'd said
all the things I never ever could say
and I wonder if I really love you
and you hear every thought I have
smile at the word "love"
Lucifer laughs gently too
he's sure he knows love is completely impossible
he ushers us out at closing time
"you don't have to go home, but you can't stay here"
he's heard that one before
and so have I
so goodnight, my love
maybe one day we'll meet again
somewhere away from the shadows of the man at the piano
yes, goodnight, my love
