Monuments

I.

Seeking more than
      a silent structure
on the winter solstice,
      an ancient holiday,
a timeless mark of beauty, creation in stone, rises from the earth,
a reason to be remembered,
my God, a reason to not be forgotten,
not by the least of His people,
in the coldest of the seasons;
we remember.

II.

Late December afternoon,
      walking nowhere
to a winter secret spot,
      a spore of believing
where lines cross and limbs branch, in cessation, in a timeless truth,
a view fit for a king,
my liege, an arcing sight to behold,
sun rising up through the frost-bare fingertips of trees,
in the coldest of the seasons;
we covenant.

III.

Moving slowly when
      you touched me
for the first time,
      an accident you planned
left a timeless mark of beauty, a scourge on my soul, in a place
even you can’t make smile,
your perfect construction,
my God, a reason to not be forgotten,
the setting sun standing still,
with your arm through mine;
we walked.

Author's Note: The word solstice comes from the Latin term "solstitium," which translates into English as "sun standing still." Winter solstice is when, because of the earth's tilt, your hemisphere is leaning farthest away from the sun, and therefore daylight is the shortest and the sun has its lowest arc in the sky.
