Women Like You (model poem of same name, by Michael Ondaatje)

by Julie Adams

they do not sit
these ladies of the island
do not give us
a moment of rest

Carnival is alive in them, in you

they dance with all
take the hard
rum as lover.
Women like you
make men eager as puppies

who came here
out of the beach land
climbed this city
to adore the pulse
and with the energy of the air
behind them

stirred a rhythm
whose motive was perfect release

wanting these curves of women
to wander and coil
round me

Well done! The first stanza packs a particular imagery punch.
