8:16 In a 2 Story House

by Trisha De Gracia

8:16 AM

Half a flight of stairs
countless bruises
and 2 red eyes later
he awakens to find the sun
burning though the window pane.
He shakes it off
and holds his head
desparate for asprin
and answers.

8:22

It starts to come back to him.
One sore arm
props up a limp
white body
as his legs find earth
and he climbs 6 steps
to close the curtains.
Groggy and disoriented
he shuffles to the bathroom
and sees it sitting there
neglected for ages
forgotten.

8:24

A creak accompanies the movement
of the cabinet door.

Damn it all
he's out of asprin.

Tears well up in his eyes
that all too familiar feeling
as he lets out the pent up frustration
of this same routine
night after night
after night.
As he slams the cabinet door
he hears a rustling
and it shakes him to the bone.

8:29

A murmered, incorherent grunt
sends a cold shock
down his newly erected spine.

8:30

Eyes wide open, terrified
he doesn't bother to look
for the father that fell
down the stairs before him
the previous night.
He knows he is there
and instead
he hurredly grabs his book bag.

8:32

The sun was a joke.
The school bus left almost
16 minutes prior
to the dawn of his April 23rd.
The cold rain comforts him
numbing the pain and the terror,
the anticipation of another night
alone with him
in a two story house.

Author's Note: An odd sort of daydream that really rattled me... symbolistically I'm not sure what ot could mean....
