Symbols


My teacher said that symbols stand for things.
In like fashion do things stand for symbols?

Can that march of people be a symbol?
Is the march the symbol?
The people, the symbol?

If my teacher is right and
symbols stand for things,
is a worker a thing or a symbol,
or maybe human?

Or maybe all three?

Faded pictures of men and women
bent at the waist
deep in stalks of green
and puffs of white,
lower their heads
as the foreman rides by.

Are they symbols of oppression?
Are they symbols of a love--misused?
...family unity?...disunity?

The foreman, a symbol of power and might?


Perhaps they are just people in an unfair game,
with rules ever-changing and neither
able to see the other...for seeing symbols.
