After-Laugh

by Aaron Howard

After laughter what is left?
What is the smile to fade into?
What is this lie we tell ourselves to keep it new
what do we confiscate for love and things true
I thought once, but forgot my point of incursion
so now I’m just left with this blank mental perversion
In which, I mean I just blank it all out, daydream away
Out of sight out of mind, so no more nightmares to find today
Wrap my own world up back inside my head
and hold on to these dark secrets until I’m dead
No more lies, no more truths
No more long hours spent in telephone booths
Forget all the misery and pain
Forget the meaning to the smell of rain

Forget all you’ve learned, it’s all just a lie
and live your life for you, not them, when you die.
