Release



An Eskimo Avilik carver rolls

an ivory embryo of perception

between his leathery hands.



He asks, “Who are you? Who hides there?”

as eternity nestles herself

in the soft furrow of his question.



Glacier-slow, a seal is released

from its ivory encasement—

held in bondage until freed.



And slowly too, in true

timeless fashion

the seconds become eons.





and eons become the

rocks we walk on.
