i saw her once on the back of a milk carton..

by Olivia Weinkein

oh
how nice of you to recognize me again
you, standing there holding up before
and after photos of me as though
they will ever be worth anything,
explaining to anyone who will listen,
"see, this is when we loved her, and
this
is when we killed her, steady now,
steady, hold the applause"
and i would crawl away and under
a rock somewhere if i thought it
would serve a purpose but nobodys
paying attention anyway to anything
trying to slip away. a disappearing act
that nobody follows. "are you coming
up for air?" - "no sir, no sir i think i'll
just lie here." yeah, nobody cares and
this conversation never takes place
but still,
your audience is so blown away by
your discovery that they can't see
anything passed their own face, their
reflection, what they consider to be
God,
you,
standing there with before and after
pictures of love gone wrong while they
simply
applaud.
