The Music of Barcelona by Derek GregoryA worn cobblestone sidewalk
sets the stage
for the music of life.
A raged busker,
gray hair and wide shining smile
serenades the crowd.
Distorted music blowing
from his dented harmonica
scores my nerves.
A twisted little man
plays Beethoven on a beat up organ
on the back of a yellow rusted moped.
On top are two long hair guinea pigs
eating spanish peanuts.
The distorted harmonica,
piercing organ music and the
screams of children's laughter watching the animals
mix
creating a single note
in the beautiful Song of Barcelona.
Bright colored flowers
surround a pure white mime
siting reverently
holding a red rose close to
her delicate white breasts.
A haggard old mime paints her young
pouting blood red lips on his imaginary canvas.
A silver boy's wild hair
reflects off the noonday sun
Frozen like a statue
his young silver muscles remain taunt
two young girls stand smiling staring.
The brave girl places a peso
in his outstretched silver hand and
is kissed aggressive yet gentle
almost erotic.
An experienced belly dancer pulls off her tattered coat,
her aged eyes force a smile
Tired sounds of her bells and chimes play slow
with forced sensuality
People walk by watching mesmerized by her fluid moves
A fat German leers while drinking his warm beer from a café table
Her eyes watch him as he pulls his money out
Her soul sold for a peso
The lust of youth and quiet jealously of age
mix
creating an intricate melody.
This is the beautiful Song of Barcelona
