[Library] The Hanged Man and The Lover

by Nikki Rice

The Hanged Man gravels at the feet of The Lover
Pleading forgiveness in his own time of need, though he knows not what he did wrong
What The Hanged Man doesn't realize, is that the rats have been removed
The Lover has already called on The Piper, to lead them from the town
but their excrement remains, in corners and cracks,
and The Lover finds a dropping each day, reminding her of the infestation
As the noose tightens on the breath in his throat, The Hanged Man weeps and weeps
The Lover stands with tears in her eyes, a naked beauty in space and time
She knows now that the past is never far behind, but the future even closer
The Hanged Man regrets all his follies, yet cannot define them clearly
His eyes shut as the box drops under his feet, and the light is shone upon him,
while The Lover cries tears that speak silent words - "We've freed him."

Author's Note: I wrote this to an ex who wouldn't take the hint, and he totally didn't get it. Ugh, that straw that broke the camel's back.
