"Fag"
I heard it yelled,
I tensed immediately,
I knew who they were talking about,
"Dyke"
"Homo"
"Queer"
"It's unnatural"
"You Freak"
"It's immoral"
"In the Bible it was Adam and Eve not Adam and Steve"
All I wanted to do was scream
my 'friends'
were being so horrible!!
"What the Fuck do you think you are doing?"
I asked finally,
they just sat there in silence,
they had forgotten I was there,
"You homophobic slobs!
What do you think you are doing?"
"Well we didn't want her...
sitting with us"
one dull eyed girl answered.
"What did you think?
She was going to hit on you?
I'm sure she has better taste!"
It was mean but I didn't care.
"I understand taht you don't
condone homosexuality,
but that was downright abusive."
This was met with a flurry of giggles,
oooh I said 'homo'!
At this I picked up my tray,
I walked over to her,
sitting alone in a corner,
I sat down,
I ate my lunch with her.
my 'friends' would never speak to me again,
not after this,
when they passed me in the halls
they'd call me a dyke,
or a bitch,
or something else,
but I didn't care,
let them think what they wanted,
I was being true to myself,
I am,
as the saying goes
"Straight but not narrow"
so they didn't like me
I never did fit in,
not with them anyhow,
I just couldn't do it,
I couldn't be one of millions,
had to be an individual,
not just another of those
small minds with big mouths.

Author's Note: Dedicated to those I knew in highschool who giggled at the word Gay until the day we graduated and probably still do. I hope I opened some minds or at least some eyes to the fact that even if you don't like a choice another person is making you can still be kind to them and possibly even be thier friend.
