And a bowl of Rocky Road (or a lesson in tolerance)

by Amy Niggel

He came to me,
I knew it was coming,
I'd known for a while,
but he hadn't
or he hadn't wanted to admit it.
So he came to me,
we had a long talk,
about hows,
and whys,
and whens,
it went on like that for hours,
just talking.
Telling him I was there,
I'd help him,
I cared about him,
yes he had to tell his family,
no he did not have to face it alone.
I'd like to have said I understood,
that I felt his pain,
but I couldn't.
I'd never faced these challenges,
I'd never been in his shoes.
I could only let him know
that I would be there,
no matter what.
We ate ice cream,
it helped,
funny how it does that,
nothing seems as bad,
not over ice cream.
I asked him,
if he was being safe,
if he wanted to get tested,
if he wanted me to go with him.
I couldn't understand it all,
but I tried hard,
giving a heterosexuals views
on his problems.
So we sat there,
since he came to me,
we sat,
and we had a long talk,
and a bowl of rocky road.

Author's Note: Dedicated to friends, and to Nora who taught me freshman year that rocky road ice cream was the best to have in your freezer if you have friends who have a habit of coming out of the closet to you.
