Cell Phones and Wind Dried Hair

by Shayla R Cakes

It's been brought to my attention that I'm not typical.

That I'm "unique" or something.

And it's been brought to my attention

That being unique is a trait thats highly smiled upon.

That the fact that I don't shop at the Gap, think for myself

Wear glasses and write poetry sets me apart from the typical 18 year old female in Suburban America.

It has been brought to my attention

That I should be more like him, more like her, more like them.

That I should smile more, have fun, and not be the way I am.

That the fact that I have my own style, ideals, and standard of living

Not only makes me unique -- it makes me different.

It has been brought to my attention that unique is good.

But different is not.

For everyone knows that conformity is the true way of life

And the fact that I'll outwardly cry without caring about the consequenses

Makes me out of reach.

It has been brought to my attention

That I don't know who I am, because I'm being pulled in thirty seven directions

And they're all the wrong way.
