The Liberation of Hell

by Ulyss Rubey

today no ray
of sun has shown-
black ashes rise
against gray skys-
red sand grinds us
to the bone-
the choice is ours
to do or die.

the choice is ours
to do or die-
into this hell
called war we go-
black ashes rise
against gray skys-
a lovers eyes
we'll never know.

a lovers eyes
we'll never know-
insanity will
take our lives-
into this hell
called war we go-
the choice is ours
to do or die.

black ashes rise
against gray skys-

today no ray
of sun has shown. . . . . . . .

Author's Note: a rewrite of "cannon fodder",m which was from the memory of monsoon season in Nam, to fit the time in Iraq. Only the terrain changes, the hell called war remains the same. We had great and noble reasons to kill and die in Nam, and now we do in Iraq. Yeah right.
