a feathered friend

by Kalikala Smith

i promise not to look
as you come near
i promise to pretend
that you're not here
but i won't promise not to smile
as the sound of your feathered flight
makes the silence
all worth while.

Author's Note: watching the birds at the bird feeder today (wow, doesn't that sound like a grandmother type thing to do)... anyways, a nuthatch (who are sooo cute) hopped over to me as i was sitting on the porch and just stared at me... then proceeded to squeak away and happily ate from the feeder... it was soo funny
