One Vine (children's poem) by Mary Ellen Smith
One vine I planted in the dirt
One little vine
why that cant hurt.
But then it rained and rained and rained
And after all that water drained,
My little vine, no longer small
Not even a little small at all
.
Grew and grew and grew and grew
Into not one green vine but two!
It overtook the trellis fast!
This growing spurt of course wont last.
But then, oh dear it grew some more
Soon it will stop, of this Im sure.
All across the house it spread.
By green tendrils it was led
Across the house and to the roof
I took a picture just for proof!
The mailman came to give us mail
A real nice man, his name is Dell.
Well, he stood there just a moment long
And our vine by now is pretty strong
It wrapped itself around his hat
Around the mailbag just like that,
Twirling round about his arm
Just like a hug, it meant no harm.
It wrapped and wrapped and wrapped and wrapped.
He yelled at us that he was trapped.
Wrapped from his head down to his toes
A morning glory on his nose!
Thru rain and snow and sleet and hail
Dell always brought to us the mail.
Add one more hazard to the list
Seems vines was something he had missed!
We freed him and he went his way
No harm was done he was ok.
And hell be able to tell the story
About the hugging morning glory
About the friendliest of plants
Hell tell his kids, uncles and aunts.
And maybe tell his grandkids too,
About our one small vine we grew.
03/26/2003 Author's Note: For our mailman Dell who delivers the mail in spite of the ever growing one vine that we planted.
