Riding a Hurricane

by Derek Gregory

Blue-green water breaks

on the bow of the ship,

everything shakes.

As the nose of the ship

works its way

out of the water

she moans

joining the soulful

meddle of the sea.

Swells move

slow rising high

then drop quickly

falling off the edge

of the earth.

The ship’s structure

vibrates with each crashing cap.

We sit

laugh

and look

to one another

each excited but nervous.

The hurricane

turnes and traps

us against the Virginia coast.
