Dont take for Granted

by Trisha De Gracia

Too weak to rise from her hospital bed
she lies awake, frightened.
the walls around her are white
and she is hooked to machines that
watch her every breath and beat
and scare her half to death.

Her crown
which was once covered
in golden ringlets
is now naked
exposed.

She wonders
absentmindedly
will I die today?
I better draw a picture
that tells them goodbye
just in case.

She'll get out her crayons
and draw a rainbow heaven
and a stick figure girl
with wings and blonde curls

While you smash the alarm
tomorrow morning at 6:00
And curse and damn the world
for making you get up.
