Sappho Revisited

by Amanda Conlogue

perfectly halved moon out at dusk
clouds tinged pink, a lover's soft blush
silver jets streak the sky
birds twitter in protest of marring
the beauty of beginning night
as street lamps illuminate
grey ribbon roads, lighting
my way home to you
the glimmering softness
reminds me of summer
approaching azaleas in bloom
I want to stop and pick
the ones deeply purple
place them behind your ears
I imagine them to suit
your luminous skin
you should always have flowers
to be worn in your hair.
