child's play

by Olivia Weinkein

on what scale do we measure
and to what degree must we exceed
until we are finally content
with enough
being even close enough
to what we swore we would have kept
always
if given the chance.

i too was a child once. here, you
are not alone. but time changes all
things and we cannot help but grow
older. seasons cannot help but turn
colder and all those promises we
whispered to keep get left behind
in the breeze of it all. but really,
we're not much different, you and me.
i too was a child once. here, you
are not alone.

Author's Note: i usually do not like to explain away my poems but this (i guess) seems a bit sketchy, so i will just say it is about struggling to find things in common and sometimes stretching a bit when really there's only one sure thing we have in common. we were once both children. i no longer try to find anything passed that.
