my safe place

by Lisa-Dawn Sparling

I can still feel your heart beating,
My head on you chest –
Your arm across my back,
Gently caressing my shoulders.

“Elephant shoe” I whisper to you,
You pull me closer and laugh –
My fingers dancing across your brown
Until you’d drift asleep.

I’d fall asleep staring at your face
Wondering what you were dreaming about,
Listening to the rhythm inside your chest,
Slowly closing my eyes.

I would wake up,
My head still rested in the same spot,
Your arm still safely around me –
My favorite place to be

I can still feel your heat beating,
My head on my pillow-
The blankets wrapped around me tight.
It’s not the same without you …….
