A Youth Forgotten

by D. Xavier Bari

The third Summer in a row
where the longer days
lasted up 'til September,
and the kids spin and romp
in the fields between
the neighborhood homes
and then back again.

They speak of cherry wood
and lemon pie,
out past back yonder
just before sunset
near the edge of the fence.

Lucy and Bobby swap
secret kisses,
sweaty and itchy
under the picnic table
while the others play dodgeball.

But later Bobby would be too good
to step out on the filthy grass
in a thousand dollar suit:-
and pious councilwoman Lucy
would propose to ban dodgeball
because of alledged mental scars.

While their precious little children
sit inside on a glass-enclosed deck
with enviro-friendly climate control
playing the latest virtual games
on their fat, lazy asses.

Touche! Nothin's the same anymore huh! You hit the mark with this politically correct, bureaucratic, psycho-babble generation, Dante. Nicely scripted. Peace...
