Salt Water

by Meredith C Hartwell

For a moment,
I am pressed
between them again,
and we are
tight like size small over
triple-D, white, and wet.
But we are
different now,
and in our half-measure
refrain of intimacy,
I trace my heart
onto his sleeve.
[swirls of nonsense
and broken lines that are
meant to say ~love~]

And we are lost to the
rhythm of the pushing
in and pushing out
and dense with flesh
and tangled limbs,
and when he rides the waves
he says, it's like
flying
, but I am
underwater, caught in the
riptide, where the sound is

far away.
So we push harder and
sweat like blood pumping
from the same heart
and I find him in the pulse
when he has given his shirt
to her.

It is over too soon
and we are breathing
separately again,
but we cannot feel
the cold, so I give him
all my liquid.
[He is all I need
to drink tonight.]
We know it's been better,
but was it worth it?

oh, yeah.

It feels like dying
never felt so good.
I stay awake
to watch him drive.

Author's Note: When you cannot get enough of someone, everything is like sex.... especially a good concert.

'Stay awake to watch him drive'- this is so meaningful and does convey the central theme of the poem presented in almost a satirical manner, though in a very subtle form. Nothing is really beautiful in fragment.

no other poet here writes of the sensual-sexual connection to love any better than you, Meredith...i am a quiet but consistent admirer...

I've read it about five times and i get something new from it each time, noticing your note at the bottom after the second read. It's very thought provoking and packs so much behind the words which are impressively chosen. Skilled work.
