The Plan by Jared WinklerHearts Pounding
to the beat of the music
fear-
Was I the only one?
Regret.
Could I go through with it?
the driver reminds me:
"Like we planned."
We took turns
Subtly giving him clues:
We loved him
He was a good man
but we were all suckers
for peer pressure..
An unsure laugh from behind
What he thought was a joke
But we felt evil tonight
"I have to pee."
Car stops
Shovel from the trunk
He laughs again
I now felt his fear
projected into my veins
twisting into pain.
What's this?
I see his face contort
as the shovel hits MY back.
For a moment,
the world stands still.
I feel the blood
struggle to my head
My eyes catch sight
of the two I had ignored
My partners, conspirators,
fellow poisoned brains,
Delighted by their betrayal.
I stumbled
My blood gave up the effort
Blackness.
When I next woke, I could
still see the light of the moon
Through my shallow grave.
Irony.
I think I'm still there.
I should have known
they were capable
and the betrayal hurts
A little more than death.
