Guilty by Precedent

by Ryan M Evon

“Before the sentence is carried out, do you have anything to say?”
I do, charged without a shred of proof
and condemned to die on this very day.

Even though my statement may be a cliché
but the case against me is not bulletproof
or even strong enough to stand the breeze today.

To do such a thing, in the past, might have been my way;
I admit that is the god’s honest truth,
my mind used to be a horrible disarray.

At one point depression cost me a fiancée
who I believed I would marry, silly youth
that I was, though I still don’t need a toupee.

I have left that anger behind, and I have tried not to stray
from my current path. If you were to sleuth
beyond my past, it would seem I am a framed prey.

In my defense I have no witness to step up and say
that I am indeed innocent, though it is the truth,
my past behavior has left me alone to this day.
Life has been hard, so just throw the switch anyway.
