Reading Robert Hayden

by Bruce W Niedt

Somehow, it’s not inappropriate
to speak in this black man’s voice –
“Those Winter Sundays”,
“Frederick Douglass” –

reciting them,
I hear his pride and quiet dignity
in the lyrical flow.

Harmonic, these words
resonate in me,
and set up a second song,

humming like wires
strung by towers
across a country.
