Dragon

by Adrian Calhoun

Usually about sundown,
the dragon comes over.
Eating anything in the kitchen.
It must be very hot inside his mouth,
a twelve pack of soda is easily downed.

Hating to turn him away,
for fear of being rude,
he did come all the way out here to visit.
Sitting for hours,
talking about anything and nothing at all.

The dragon is miles from home,
doesn't know anyone else in these parts.
So I endure conversation,
that has gone far too long.

Finally, late in the evening,
the dragon does leave.
Deep in my heart I hope this will change,
but I know sometime in another flight,
he is sure to return.

For now I sweep the ashes from my porch,
and throw the dragons cigarette butts away.
Two whole packs in his five hour stay.

I like this new twist on a dragon story. Its good to have friends in high places. Big smiles!

Quite an appropriate comparison--dragon to overstaying, smoking visitor. You may be doing a real kindness however. He is obviously lonely.
