Buenaventura

by Leonard M Hawkes

Here
'Neath Fremont
Cottonwoods
Beside the Weber,
I feel them,
"Miles Goodyear
And Company,"
Followers
Of the Rivers,
Witnesses
Of the Wild.

And couched,

Here,
In rubbered conveyance,
Gazing beyond
The tar
Through braided wire
O'er manicured
Gaming turf
At leaden
Cloud masses
Sweeping
Beyond Wilson Bluff,
Trailing curtains
Of snow
Across the lake;

I Know:

Truth harmonizing
With chorusing
February blackbirds
And a locomotive's
Lonesome wail.
