my umbrella

by Emily G Myers

I took a walk in the rain
I'm always walking in the rain
and my heart shelters itself
hiding away where no one can reach
the storm rages as always
I believe in thunder
I believe that lightning strikes
more than I believe in love
more than I believe in sincerity
but I never surrendered my walking
it isn't hard to take a walk
braving the thunder and lightning
I keep my head down
hood up
my heart protected
coat zipped around it
I never used an umbrella
never had an umbrella to use
I was happy to dodge the lightning bolts
happy to declare my own strength
when I didn't shudder at the thunder
I'm always walking in the rain
I never used an umbrella
until now
until you
and slowly I unzip my coat
allow my heart some space
you show me how to believe
show me how to trust
and the storm rages as always
I don't even notice anymore
cause the rain can't touch me
it wouldn't dare touch me
when I've got an umbrella like you

Author's Note: a sequel to "protection"? yeah, pretty much.
