i'm just thinking about september now
the person i was those days
who we were
facing sunrises together, sunsets
all of the running but seeming to
never get anywhere fast enough
and not really caring
holding hands and friendships
praying we would never run out of time
holding breath to keep fall from coming
to keep ourselves from falling
into the cold of a threatening winter

september should have lasted forever.

but like everything good, it had to end
and i'm just thinking about september now
how different everything is,
how so much more is missing from these days
than warm weather.

yes,
september should have lasted forever.
