if we were fish

by Olivia Weinkein

we build mountains
to hold ourselves down
if we were fish
we could get through this
but i never learned to swim
the right way and you're still
afraid of water
and this is what hangs us from
trees, what keeps us suspended
in dead-air. mad revelations that
haunt well past midnight into the
early morning hours painting our
days with a foreboding vision we
cannot escape from. even if we were
birds, we could not escape from
this and i will not again die trying.
