Reeders

by Leonard M Hawkes

On ancestral land,
The west-side,
Beyond the grove
Before North Lake
By the church farm
(Not North Ward);
Where springs
Bubble up for
The Hatchery,
Scotty's Pond,
And the North
String Irrigation.

Wilson Lane turns
Kotter Lane
Across the highway;
And Frank's hired man
Built a house
Near the hay barn
On the Southside;
On the North,
Wynn's horse shed,
Beside the fence
Below white poplars
There by Larsen's.

French Provincial,
And not just
Cosmetically authentic:
Expansive vaulted roofs,
Brick chimneys,
Elegant Stucco,
Lofty windows;
Rising in the pasture,
Growing over time
Like insensibility
And the distance
In the family.

You paint a rustic picture of familiarity. It has a very nice halting rythm. A rural community is depicted very well.
