January 7th, 1982

by Melina Raven Maness Diebold

Ripped from what was warm

and comfortable

embryonic

placetonic

so much better inside

But now

I'm out

and can't return

and I'm waiting

with grey skies curtained

outside the hospital window

in Jackson, Tennessee

waiting

for my nom de plume to-be

"She's not a Kara Laine..."

"How about you sleep on it?"

later

much later

a James Bond movie later

"She's a Melina-

you can pick the middle"

"Well, I've always loved Poe

and his masterpiece, The Raven"

(for as we all know

poems about dead loves and

haunting ravens good baby names do make...)

So glad that I'm not a Kara Laine

Author's Note: from the forums, an interesting poetic challenge/prompt. "This is about when I was born and how I got my name (The Bond movie is For Your Eyes Only, with Melina being the Bond girl, played by Carole Bouquet). My father is a poet and loved Poe, and kind of felt dejected about not being able to name me Kara Laine (his favorite), so he sort gave himself creative license on my middle name. Since The Raven was his fave, he decided on that, and Melina Raven I became, and still am, and will ever be. I love my name."

you have a beautiful name, I wish my name had as much thought put into as yours does.
