Good Night

by Amanda Conlogue

She stepped
Off the porch
Escaping
The light,
The grass
Hissed,
Garden snakes
Slithering
Towards the car,
I called out
Unsure of her
Whereabouts,
My only response,
A slamming door
Followed by
The start
Of an engine.

I'm wondering if the snakes walked on two legs.
