Avoiding Sleep

by Amanda Conlogue

Another late night
Too much caffeine and nicotine
And at three a.m., I’m wired
Naked in bed, cold seeping
Between membranes of skin
The tickle of hair hanging
Down my back, a mocking caress
I’m alone with a radio
Modest comfort, my thoughts
Drift to you, your empty house
Avoiding sleep
Avoiding being alone
What are you doing
As the seconds tick by
Echoing through all those rooms
What are you thinking
In those hours before dawn
It’s the last thought
On my mind as I drift
Into broken hours of sleep
It’s still there when I wake.
