that little devil

by Olivia Weinkein

this little devil dancing about
teaching me again to break things.
the taste of curves flattened
says to fly up up no matter what
fear i have of heights, what beliefs
i have against looking down at people,
down at you.
and i kept you open for a reason this
little devil says. i never swallowed the
opportunity to chew you inside out.
i kept it safe and hidden inside my
mouth.
he says he knew i would still need this
someday, that it was all a matter of
time and strengthening of will-
the yearning for revenge and other
such pettiness. and he's taking my
hand now and bargaining for my trust
and soon, i will grow to love him
and believe in his words.
i will fly up up and find you,
come crushing down, surrounding you
with my broken air.
this little devil grows more excited now
screaming "yes, yes! this is what it's
about, what it has always been about.
if you can't make them love you, then
by God, chew them
inside out!"
