What you see is what you get

by Mary Ellen Smith

Might rhyme a word or two at night
When the moons too bright.
But a poet’s thoughts too far too see
And my blood too thick
And warm in me.

No true anguish could I share
Its all worked out
Between here and there.
The face I show, lipsticked red
Applied shortly after up from bed.

Smile then, yes, that will do.
People then remember you.
As bright and friendly
Full of smiles.
It’s served me well these many miles.

No butterfly in chrysalis
No deep and frightening dark abyss.
Water is warmer
The more you get wet and,
What you see is what you get.
