January Camp 2003 (Near Cutler)

by Leonard M Hawkes

I heard your cry in the night
that lonesome whistle,
the clank and rattle on the rails,
the click and buzz of wires in the mist,
the roaring whir of the plant,
the truck rumbles on the distant highway,
the slap, lap, and flow of the river,
the honking of unseen geese,
the shill whine of wind in maples,
the rush of gusts through the sage,
the hoot of owls,
the yap of coyotes,
the ping and clang of feet on the trestle,
the crunching of boots in the gravel,
the tedious barking of dogs,
the sibilant whispers in the dark,
the obtrusive outbursts of the boys
the beat of my own heart in my own ears,
And I knew I was home.
