Reassurance

by Amanda Conlogue

We used to spend
Midnights like this
Drinking coffee, talking
Over your cigarette smoke
Tonight, I’m here alone
Waiting for my order
Guessing the possibilities
Of where you could be
Sugar crystallizes in my cup
I watch the creamer swirl
There’s a boy with his fist
Held over his mouth
Staring at nothing
And I want to catch
His gaze and reassure
Him with a smile
