he said

by Emily G Myers

he said
he wanted
I said
we'll see
but sometimes I'm just too afraid
what if I'm not enough for a boy like him?
what if I can't be what he needs?
he said
he wanted
but I couldn't give
so afraid
what if I'm not a woman yet?
what if a boy like him is a man?
and I'm just a little girl
pretending
make-up and hair
like I know what I'm doing
I don't
but we'll see
he said
don't worry about it
but I do
because
he says
he gives
but I can't say
I can't give
and what if I'm not enough for him?
we'll see

Author's Note: I'm painfully naive a lot of times when it comes to relationships. I want to be able to participate in equal give and take, but sometimes it feels like I'm not going to be able to give enough. This poem is that worry.

The anxiety and the conflict is well pronounced. Nice piece.
