only ghosts

by Emily G Myers

no one understands
and that's okay
let them live in a cloud
we know what we're doing
I know what I'm feeling
I can feel what you're feeling
as you press yourself closer
lips against ears
no one can know what we know
I don't want them to
it's not important
that he understand
love is not to be understood
he leans in close
and kisses a tear
whispers in my ear
it doesn't matter what's pitched
we're ghosts to him
this isn't about winning
it's about surviving
and when I cry
there's only one place to go
I never lied to him
but I'm not sticking around to hurt
whenever I try to strike back
he puts those lips near my ear
whispers
we're only ghosts to him
no one can know what we know
only you and me
and it's okay if no one understands
it's not meant to be understood
by anyone but us
and in the thickness of the dark
his whispers in my ear
holds my heart
we're only ghosts to him

Author's Note: When you're holding on to someone, it doesn't really matter that you're being attacked. The world could be against you and you wouldn't care cause there's someone holding your hand and telling you it's going to be okay. You become a ghost. If someone throws a punch, it goes right through you. That's the escape this poem goes to.
