the taste of boys & butterscotch

by Olivia Weinkein

lovely girl, they'll
remember you stealing the scene
butterscotch kisses and the
boys, all those boys
who in the end always tasted the same.
semen and butterscotch
and a thanks and sometimes a bye
(what, no postcards)
lovely girl, they never longed to
carve out your name nor woo you
to tears and forever-after.
they just poked and prodded
until they hit the right spot
that little river of wetness
with ragged cliffs, yet they offered
to show you just the right way,
your mouth an apple of so many possibilities.
lovely girl, you were never much of a
student...
so who would have guessed they would finally
succeed in teaching you how to sing
and eventually,

how to swallow.
