the season of slaughter

by Olivia Weinkein

because they love her
they will break her
because enough
is never enough
not really.
(do you see the way they
avoid your eyes while claiming
to own everything you could ever possibly want...
do you see...)

but no.

you don't.

and i'm not sure who's more to blame
the hunters, so eager to chase and claim
as their trophy, as their perfect snapshot
the girl who's forever hiding in the bushes,
or the girl,
so willing to rise from hiding and be maimed
shamed...

the one with fingertips stroking the gun isn't always the reckless one.

Intense wordplay and vivid imagery.
