Down That Road

by Kristine Briese

I've been down that road
where what you know and
what you see are inexplicably
at odds with each other,
where a thousand voices
echo among the trees and
it's unclear which is yours.

I've been down that road
where a shadow can be
a haven or a deathtrap
and both are equally appealing,
where a sound or a smell
can unleash an entire life that
rises up to drown you again.

I've been down that road
and I'm waiting for you
around the next bend.

The rhythmic style of this piece allows for easy reading and the hopeful message caps it off nicely. Nice work, Kristine. Peace...

Simply 'wow' is the comment I could most easily leave. This is a really intriguing look at the experience, your writing really expresses it well to people like me who haven't been through that kind of thing. Good to know you made it.

Kristine- This is so overwhelmingly transparent to me. It's almost as if you plucked my feelings out of me and put them so painfully on paper. You write so well and so accurately of what many people struggle to grasp...very, very well done. And I love the last line..."waiting for you around the next bend"...as a hand of hope. Robin

I read the final 'you' as I did in the previous two stanzas - maybe I've got that wrong, but my impression of 'hope' equates with 'nothing left to lose'...
