Twas the Night Before Christmas....

by Mary Ellen Smith

Twas the night before Christmas and everyone slept
Except sweet little Katie who quietly crept.
Down the stairs, round the corner with pillow in tow
Tonight she would stay up. Tonight she would know.

She’d listen for reindeer hoofs making a noise.
For the sound of the twinkling of Katie’s new toys.
So excited why how could a little girl sleep?
She cozied up with her blanket, her vigil to keep.

Every whisper attended, every hum of the wind
Katie sat there and listened, she listened and grinned.
So sure of her cleverness she giggled and then,
With one more happy thought she giggled again!

In the dark she could see the fire’s last glow
How Santa would manage she just didn’t know.
How a man oh so jolly could fit down the flue
And not get a singe she hadn’t a clue.

No worries, she thought as she started to dream
Dear Katie was falling asleep it would seem.
Too big of an hour for one oh so small
Too sleepy to hear her mom and dad call.

They found her just where they thought that they might.
Asleep like an angel this Christmas Eve night.
They lovingly gathered her unto themselves
And put her back to her bed like good little elves.

Tender, sweet; most of us can relate to wanting to stay up to see "if there was a Santa Claus". A very good read aloud!
